Keith Giffen, a seasoned author and illustrator who contributed to DC’s Lobo, Jamie Reyes’ Blue Beetle, and Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has passed away at the age of 70. Paul Levitz, a longtime partner, posted on Facebook to confirm his demise.
The family of the comics veteran announced his death on Facebook Wednesday via a sardonic post pre-written by Giffen: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thanx,” adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.” A stroke was attributed as the cause of death.
The tragic news is now official: Keith Giffen has left to build new worlds beyond of reach for us living beings, according to Levitz. “In terms of comics, Keith undoubtedly had the most fertile creative mind of our generation. He was constantly spewing out thoughts in an unlimited amount. Thankfully, most people did not view print as completely weird or inappropriate. however, those that did!
“We collaborated on more than 60 stories. Because of his suggestions and contributions to character moments and drama, many of them came out much better thanks to him than they would have with any other collaborator. On a few occasions, we experienced difficult moments, but I believe it was to be expected in a lengthy relationship.
“Keith chose to be a curmudgeon; he was good at it and liked it. He didn’t live a healthy lifestyle, like many musicians, which resulted in difficult moments that he always laughed off. When not in the spotlight, he was a family man, and his vulnerable sides were shown. Hugs to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Oh, and Anna, now that he’s back, treat him well.
