Paula Hartmann Wiki Biography
Harry Houdini was born as Erik Weisz in Budapest. Later, he became known as Ehrich Weiss or Harry Weiss. He was a Hungarian-American illusionist and stunt performer famed for his sensational escape acts. Houdini gained initial attention as “Harry Handcuff Houdini” during a tour of Europe, where he challenged police forces to keep him locked up. He later expanded his repertoire to include escape acts involving chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, straitjackets under water, and having to hold his breath inside a sealed milk can. In 1904, he captivated thousands as he attempted to escape from special handcuffs commissioned by London’s Daily Mirror, keeping them in suspense for an hour. He even performed stunts such as being buried alive and clawing his way to the surface, often emerging in a state of near-breakdown. Despite rumors that his escapes were staged, Houdini positioned himself as an opponent of fake magicians and spiritualists. He served as President of the Society of American Magicians and was passionate about upholding professional standards and exposing fraudulent artists. Houdini also vigorously pursued legal action against anyone who pirated his escape stunts. Despite making several movies, he abandoned acting when it failed to bring in profits. Houdini was also an avid aviator and aspired to become the first person to fly a plane in Australia.
